Mojo Music Magazine: The Nuclear Banana, Riot on Kansas City Strip
“Era-evoking debut from garage-punk supergroup drawn from The Standells/The Fuzztones/Vanilla Fudge ranks.
In 2015, guitarist/singer Joey Skidmore of the Joey Skidmore Band set up Skid-O-Rama, the now annual garage festival in Kansas City.
In the same DIY spirit, he also put together the Nuclear Banana, a touring supergroup featuring vocalist/guitarist Tony Valentino of The Standells, plus members of The Fuzztones, The Del-Lords, and Vanilla Fudge. This eight-track debut album is split half and half between covers and originals. Versions of The Standells’ Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White, and Medication, Barry McGuire’s Eve Of Destruction and the Stones’ Tell Me are all one-two punches with fuzz, reverb, feedback and drone as and when required. The rest, written by Skidmore and Valentino, are in the same proto-punk style, peaking with You’re Worth The Risk.” -Lois Wilson, September 2023
